Save That Money!

03:59 Aug 24 2011
Times Read: 451

How much money do you shell out for things that you could easily make yourself out of stuff you toss out only for it to sit forever in a landfill useless? Heck, you already shelled out money for the stuff you're tossing out anyway. What am I talking about? Here's a few examples.

My husband and have trouble keeping loose things organized in the closet sometimes. We don't keep a dresser. My solution for underthings and bits that don't work out on hangers well was a hanging organizer. It wound up costing around $20.00. When I suggested to my husband that we get something similar for his, he refused to spend the money.

This put a serious dent in my getting the closet organized plans. Then it hit me. My husband had been getting cases of mountain dew, and hadn't thrown out the boxes. I simply ripped off the open flaps from where he had opened in ton one side and filled the boxes with socks, underthings, et cetera. There were about four of them, and they worked wonderful for keeping things organized on his side of the closet rack. :D *And as an added bonus, as he is an avid Mt. Dew addict, the "design" appeals to him. :D

As another example, why spend a ton of money on those "special" drawstring bags for keeping plastic grocery store bags? With just a little tiny bit of work, you can easily add a drawsting to an old dishtowel, put a seam together with some liquid stitch, add a hook to go over a cabinet door handle and wallah, you saved a dishtowel that would have otherwise went in the trash, and saved yourself about $4.99 *You can even get extra crafty with it and add googly eyes, arms legs, accessories, get creative!*

Paper towel and toilet paper rolls have so many uses it's ridiculous. Storage problems can be as simple as saving butter containers, oatmeal containers, and if you don't want folk to know just what they are..let your craftiness disguise them. *Paper mache can do wonders. These simple items can drastically reduce clutter, without costing you one extra dime.

Glass jars are also wonderful for these kinds of things. They make excellent piggy banks, I've seen them turned into everything from planters to picklejar goldfish bowls. The options are virtually endless. I am almost willing to bet that someone could save enough moolah utilizing these moneysaving items and crafting them into alternative uses that they could take a small vacation with it.

Might consider making that a challenge to myself just to find out! :D
